Talking to Folks in Eatonville

Posted by Lynn on September 20, 2007

Darcy with Mike Jeffries and Ray Harper Darcy talked with a group of folks over the weekend in Eatonville at the home of Bruce and Ann Lachney.   There were about 30 people who came to the Lachney's farm to talk and share their ideas and concerns with each other and with Darcy and a lot of kids who came to play on the farm.  There was good food and plenty of opportunity to talk with most of the people who stopped by.  The picture to the right above shows Darcy in conversation with Mike Jeffries, publisher of The Dispatch, a weekly Pierce County paper, and Ray Harper, a member of the Eatonville Town Council.

Darcy with Jessica EricksonDarcy also heard about high school student Jessica Erickson's recent trip to China.   As part of a mission group, Jessica spent one week in a large city visiting with young people who were highly technical and articulate and another week assisting people in the countryside, where she saw a level of poverty that was stunning to her.

As is the case these days when people talk politics, the conversation often turned to Iraq or healthcare and both those topics were part of what Darcy talked about when she took the floor to share her ideas about what Congress needs to do.  After reminding people of what the Bush Administration has done in Iraq and not done in healthcare, Darcy shared her basic principles for governing:

1) Hard work should be rewarded

2) Government should treat everyone fairly

3) Government should stay out of people's personal lives

4) Government should keep it's promises to people

5) We should take care of our children and leave them a better world

She said that people could pretty much figure out what she would stand for by understanding those principles.  Then she took questions.  Again, the questions generally centered on healthcare and the prospects for ending the war in Iraq with a few about education, immigration and agriculture as well.

Bruce, shown here with his wife, Ann, and Darcy, is currently a school board member in Eatonville.  He is also running for Pierce County Council, District 3.  After the event, he told Darcy that this group of people generally considered themselves to be moderates and half of them probably voted for Reichert in the 2006 election.  But they were all ready for something else this year and seemed to like what they heard from Darcy.  Darcy with Bruce and Ann Lachney
