Darcy Burner Makes Transparency Pledge on Earmarks

Bellevue, WA (Feb. 8) - Darcy Burner, the Democratic candidate for Congress in Washington State's 8th Congressional District, announced today that she is making a public pledge that, once elected, she will voluntarily post on her official web site a regularly updated list of all earmarks and targeted tax benefits that she has requested.

The pledge has been written and promoted by the Sunlight Foundation, in tandem with Americans for Prosperity, OMB Watch and Taxpayers for Common Sense. The Sunlight Foundation is a good government group committed to enabling "citizens to learn more about what Congress and their elected representatives are doing, and thus help reduce corruption, ensure greater transparency and accountability by government, and foster public trust in the vital institutions of democracy."

The full text of the earmark transparency pledge can be read here <http://www.sunlightfoundation.com/node/2924> .

"All of the scandals we have seen in the last year, from Bridges to Nowhere to the corrupt activities of lobbyist Jack Abramoff and his many enablers in Congress, is a clear indication of the need to change how we do business in Washington, D.C. Unfortunately, our current representative in Congress seems eager to engage in the worst sort of pork barrel politics, putting special interests - and his own political fortunes - ahead of those of the American taxpayer," Burner said.

To this point only one sitting member of Congress has signed the pledge: Jeff Flake, Republican of Arizona.
