Darcy Burner Reports Another Record Fundraising Quarter
Bellevue, WA (Jan. 10) –Darcy Burner, the Democratic candidate in the 8th Congressional District, ended 2007 with another record fundraising tally for a challenger in Washington State, and begins 2008 having already raised more than $850,000.
In her official filing with the Federal Elections Commission, Burner reports having raised $339,494 for the October to December period, and closed 2007 having raised $858,125 total with $607,144 cash on hand. Over the last three months, Burner’s cash on hand total surged from $370,000 that had been banked at the end of the third quarter.
The $339,000 raised is expected to place Burner in the top two or three among challengers in the Western states, and in the top tier nationally. It is also a record for a congressional challenger in Washington State in the fourth quarter of the off-year.
“We enter 2008 having laid a solid foundation for this campaign,” Burner said. “At this point in the previous campaign, I was still a little-known first time candidate struggling to raise enough resources to mount a credible challenge. This time around we are in a much stronger position. The enthusiasm and support I receive daily from so many people concerned about the direction of the country is palpable, and it is reflected in our strong fundraising.”
Of the $339,000 raised in the fourth quarter, more than $290,000 – or 86 percent – came from 1,495 individual contributors.
Her fourth quarter fundraising topped the $305,000 raised in the previous quarter, a fundraising surge that was even more impressive given that the third quarter tally was boosted by a four-day, $123,000 internet fundraising drive tied to President Bush’s high-dollar event for her opponent, incumbent Republican Congressman Dave Reichert.
Burner outraised Reichert in both the second and third quarters of 2007 after announcing her candidacy in March. The $858,000 raised in 2007 is well over four times the $185,000 she had raised at this point in the previous campaign, and Burner has banked over $500,000 more. In the 2006 election, Burner lost narrowly to Reichert by 7,200 votes.
