Along with getting a Democrat elected President this year, it is equally critical that we help give them as big a majority as possible, in both houses of Congress.

To this end, I have been organizing a fundraiser on June 7th for Darcy Burner who is running for Congress as a Democrat in the 8th District of Washington. This district includes Bellevue, Washington–the city where I grew up.

Washington’s 8th congressional district is going to be a fiercely contested and crucial battleground in 2008. It is one of only a handful of congressional districts nationwide that voted for Al Gore in 2000, and John Kerry in 2004, but is currently represented by a Republican congressman. As such, this is a very winnable district for the Democrats this year–and one that the Republicans are going to fight tooth and nail to defend, because they know that once they lose it, it will be very difficult to win back.

Darcy Burner is an exceptional candidate for Congress. I watched her jump onto the political scene in 2006 when, as an underdog, she nearly defeated the heavily favored incumbent, Dave Reichert, losing by only about 7,000 votes. Instead of licking her wounds, Darcy has taken an active leadership role in rallying other congressional candidates in helping to craft a sensible plan for withdrawing from Iraq. As a result of this, and her strength in organizing and fundraising, she has become a favorite of the national Democratic party, who will help her do what it takes to win the seat this year.

2008 has the potential of being a watershed year in American politics. After eight years of gross mismanagement by George W. Bush and his cronies, the mood of the nation has swung decisively behind the Democrats. This has been proven by unprecedented victories in three special congressional races in heavily Republican districts in Illinois, Louisiana and Mississippi. If those seats can go Democratic, there is no reason that Washington’s 8th District can’t.

It’s critical for the next Democratic President to have a strong mandate from the people, as well as a working majority in both houses of Congress. Anything we can do to bolster those majorities will help bring about the real and meaningful change that this country needs.

If you live in the Seattle area and would like to attend the fundraiser on June 7th, please email me and I will send you the details.

Let me tell you about Darcy.

Darcy grew up in a blue-collar, military family. She put herself through Harvard and worked at several high-tech firms before taking a job as a manager at Microsoft. Motivated to create a better world for her young son, Henry, Darcy is running a grassroots-driven campaign, focused on ending the war in Iraq, increasing healthcare accessibility, restoring fairness and justice, and ensuring an economy that works for everyone.

You can make a difference.

Your dollars now will have the greatest effect – please help Darcy’s campaign (and my fundraising effort) grow faster and stronger over the next few weeks. An investment of $50, $250, $500, or whatever you can afford, will swell the tide toward victory next November!

Thank you for responding to my invitation to contribute. Together we can make a difference.
